Women’s Soccer Earns Spot in RRAC Tournament with OLLU Draw

SAN ANTONIO – The A&M-San Antonio women's soccer team made history earlier today by fighting to a 0-0 draw against Our Lady of the Lake University. In just the second year that the program has been eligible to compete in the Red River Athletic Conference tournament, the Jaguars earn a spot after finishing the regular season with a record of (9-3-3, 6-3-2 RRAC).

The Jaguars outshot the Saints 9-to-11 on the afternoon while putting five shots on goal and holding OLLU to just two shots on frame. TAMUSA also recorded four corner kicks while the Saints took three. Sophomore keeper Maram Abdeljaber (El Paso, Texas/Franklin) picked up her 34th and 35th saves of the season while recording her fifth shutout of the season. Freshman Ana Barragan (Brownsville, Texas) accounted for four of the Jaguars shot on the day with one of those being on frame. Freshman Julia Pace (San Antonio, Texas) also tallied two shots during the match.

How It Happened

Sophomore Brooke Theis (Spokane, Washington) quickly came out and took a shot that the OLLU keeper saved just three minutes into the match. TAMUSA continued to attack and earned a corner in the sixth minute but they were unable to capitalize.

It wasn't until 17 minutes into the match that the Saints were able to get a clean shot off but it was just wide of the goal. A few seconds later, OLLU took there only other shot of the half but it was not on target. The A&M-San Antonio defense made it difficult for Our Lady of the Lake to string together enough passes to take a shot.

About 21 minutes in, Pace put a shot on frame but the Saints keeper made the save. Despite controlling the pitch for the first half, TAMUSA and OLLU were tied 0-0.

As the whistle blew to start the second half, the Jaguars quickly raced up the pitch to take a couple shots but neither found the back of the net. OLLU quickly countered by taking a corner kick but the Jaguars defended it well.

In the 65th minutes, Abdeljaber made her first save of the match. A&M-San Antonio shortly took two corners but were unable to score the game-winner. Both teams pressed to score but after a hard fought match, the Jaguars and Saints ended 90 minutes of play in a 0-0 draw.
