Saints Softball Takes on Oregon Tech at NAIA World Series

COLUMBUS, GA. (May 25, 2024) - Following their first-ever NAIA World Series victory on Friday night, the NAIA No. 1-ranked Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) softball squad faces the Oregon Tech Lady Owls today at 4 p.m. Eastern Time. The winner stays in the championship bracket while the loser drops to an elimination game. 

vs. Madonna University (May 24)

The No. 1 seed Saints faced No. 8 seed Madonna University to open competition at the NAIA World Series on Friday. The first three innings were scoreless, but the Saints put runners on base with hard hits. OLLU put up the first run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Marissa Bradley doubled to left field to score Kayla Dreese. Bradley picked up another RBI in the sixth frame with a sacrifice fly to bring home Ava Hernandez. Bradi Hill later doubled down the left field line in the same inning to bring in Dreese. The Saints won 3-0 backed by eight hits. Cassandra Valdez pitched a solid game by allowing only two hits eight strikeouts. Valdez moves to 27-1 on the season with the win. The Saints advanced in the championship bracket with the victory.

Oregon Tech overview

The No. 5 seed Lady Owls also won their first game of the tournament. They defeated No. 4 seed the University of the Cumberlands 2-1 on Thursday. Puakea Milbourne went 3-for-3 at the plate with one RBI. Kacie Schmidt pitched a complete game with five strikeouts and allowed six hits. The Lady Owls runs were both unearned due to errors by Cumberlands. 

The Lady Owls are 48-10 on the season. They advanced to the NAIA World Series after beating Vanguard University twice in the Cascade Collegiate Conference championship. Kaila Mick is hitting .471 and Milbourne has 13 home runs. Schmidt has pitched 194 innings with a 1.70 ERA. The pitching staff has limited hitters to a .230 batting average. This will be the first matchup between the two teams.
