Softball Opens 1-2 At OLLU Classic

Erik Holth, CBC Sports Information Director

San Antonio, Texas – Opening the 2023 season on the road this morning, Central Baptist College softball was on the field at Our Lady of the Lake University today to take on the #15 Our Lady of the Lake Saints and the Jaguars of the University of Houston-Victoria. CBC (1-2) dropped the first two contests, but won the third contest behind timely hitting and great pitching.

GAME ONE - #15 OLLU 6, CBC 1

OLLU took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a double and CBC tied the game in the top of the second after Allison Wagle doubled with one out, moved to third on a single by Lauren Anderson, and stole home on a double steal with Anderson to make it 1-1. Unfortunately, the Mustangs mustered only one hit the rest of the game while OLLU tallied single runs in the third and fourth innings and three in the sixth to close out the defeat for CBC. Emily Cole started and went the first five innings, allowing nine hits and six runs while walking two and striking out two. Melanie Phillips came in to pitch the sixth, walking one and hitting two batters but allowing nothing else.

GAME TWO – UHV 5, CBC 2

Neither team scored in the first two innings. UHV scored one in the third and four in the fifth to lead 5-0 after four-and-a-half innings. Wagle would record the first RBI of the season for the Mustangs in the bottom of the fifth on a sac fly to make it 5-1 and Katie Smith would single home Maddie Thompson in the sixth to make it 5-2 but that was as close as the Mustangs would get, getting a pair of runners on in the seventh before failing to cash in. Hannah Work scattered 12 hits over five-and-a-third innings, allowing five runs while striking out two. Ysabella Esquivel pitched the final one-and-two-thirds, allowing just two hits.

GAME THREE – CBC 3, UHV 1

The Mustangs jumped up quickly in the final game of day one, with Anderson singling home Smith in the top of the first to make it 1-0. Averie Ayers cruised through the first three innings before allowing a home run in the fourth to tie the score at one. It would stay that way until the seventh when Anderson came through in the clutch, doubling in Smith and Jordyn Frederic to make it 3-1. Ayers would allow a one out single in the seventh, but put down a rally to give CBC their first win of the season. Ayers threw a complete game five hitter and walked four while striking out one to earn her first win of the season.
