Saints Baseball Opens 2023 Season Against USAO

SAN ANTONIO (Jan. 28, 2023) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) baseball team took one of three games against No. 19-ranked University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (USAO) in the 2023 season series opener this weekend. The Saints begin the year 1-2 while the Drovers sit at 2-1.

Game One

The Drovers took an early lead in the first game of the series. Christopher Martinez doubled to score Ben Lawson and Ryan Duncan in the top of the first inning. The Saints would respond in the bottom of the second inning to tie the contest. Noah Rodriguez smacked a double to left field that brought home Christian Martinez. Tyler Vivier followed with a double to left field to bring in Rodriguez.

The game remained deadlocked until the top of the fifth inning. Gage Gaunt doubled to score Peyton McDowall and regain the lead for the Drovers. The Drovers added another run in the seventh inning and won 4-2. Joshua Mendez started on the mound for the Saints. He went four innings and allowed two earned runs on six hits. Mendez struck out three batters and walked three. John B. Ortega and Chase Dunn pitched in relief.

Game Two

The Drovers took a 2-0 series lead after winning the second game of the doubleheader on Friday. The game was scoreless through seven innings and required extra frames. USAO scored four runs on four hits in the top of the eighth inning to lead 4-0. Brandon Betancourt doubled in the bottom of the frame and ended up taking third base on a passed ball. The Saints were unable to score Betancourt and lost 4-0.

Alec Martinez had a great outing by allowing only three hits in five innings of work. Dominique Boggs pitched 2.1 innings in relief and allowed three earned runs on five hits. Christopher Perez pitched 0.2 innings and gave up one hit. Vivier, Betancourt and Francisco Martinez accounted for the Saints three hits.

Game Three

The Saints offense came to life in the series finale. OLLU totaled 11 runs and limited the Drovers to four hits. Vivier, Jackson Kalisky and Caimyn Holiday all had a multi-hit game. Francisco Martinez totaled three RBIs and drew two walks. Starting pitcher Javier De Alejandro pitched five innings with two strikeouts. De Alejandro only gave up one hit during his work on the mound. The Saints used six pitchers in relief. The Saints won 11-5 behind 10 hits.
