Saints Battle But Fall to Alexandria

ALEXANDRIA, LA. (April 10, 2023) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) baseball team battled LSU-Alexandria (LSUA) in a Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) doubleheader but fell 3-5 and 8-11. The Saints move to 20-17 overall and 12-8 in the conference. The Generals improve to 22-15 overall and 14-6 in RRAC play.

Head Coach Matt Piker commented, "It was a tough day for us. There are lots of things we could use as an excuse, but that is something we will never do. We have to get back to work and get ready for another tough series this weekend., I can't wait to see how our men bounce back and respond."

History

The Saints are 12-16 against the Generals. Last season, the Saints lost all three games to LSUA 1-6, 3-7 and 5-6.

Game one

The Generals scored four runs in the first inning. After a Saints error, Zach Mengarell and Cameron Daigle scored unearned runs. Blaise Foote's run was also unearned. A run from Jordan Ardoin was unearned, and the Generals took the early 4-0 lead.

Jimmy Valle hit a single, allowing Jackson Kalisky to score to move the score to 4-1. Valle returned to the box and smashed a homer, and the Saints now trailed 4-2.

Julien Kliebert hit a home run in the fifth inning, and LSUA increased their lead to 5-2.

Kalisky threatened in the seventh inning with a single to send Christian Martinez home, but the Saints could not add any more runs to end the game with a 5-3 loss.

Valle led the offense after going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a homer. Joshua Mendez suffered the loss after pitching all six innings while striking out four and allowing three earned runs.

Game two

The Generals added the first run in the second game in the bottom of the first inning. Foote hit a sac fly to score Mengarell.

LSUA added five more runs in the second inning. A single from Daigle sent Kliebert and Austin Manuel home. A double from Foote scored Daigle and Mengarell. The Generals added another run in the third inning after a hit from Kliebert scored Keegan Garcia. The Generals now led 7-0.

The Saints added two runs in the sixth inning. Tyler Vivier doubled, and Criztian Delgado came home. Another double from Jacob Montejano scored Vivier, and the Generals now led 7-2.

The Generals scored three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull ahead 10-2. Kliebert, Daigle, and Mengarell scored the runs for the Generals.

In the top of the eighth inning, Kalisky hit a sac fly to score Caimyn Holiday. A single from Diego Zuniga scored Montejano. The Saints now trailed 10-4.

The Generals added three runs to close out the eighth inning to go up 13-4. The Saints finished out the game with four runs in the ninth inning. Vivier got a homer to score Christian Martinez. Montejano followed with another home run that also sent Holiday home. The game ended with LSUA winning 13-8.

Montejano led the offense after he went 3-for-5, adding two runs and three RBIs. Vivier went 2-for-5, adding two runs and three RBIs.

Alec Martinez suffered the loss after pitching two innings. Devin Benavides closed the game by throwing three innings and striking out four.

The Saints play a three-game series in Austin, Texas, against RRAC opponent Huston-Tillotson University April 14-15.
