Saints Complete Regular Season With Sweep Against Southwest

SAN ANTONIO (April 29, 2023) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) baseball team swept the University of the Southwest (USW) Mustangs in a three-game series over the weekend. The Saints improve to 29-18 overall and 20-9 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Mustangs fall to 22-22-26 overall and 11-19 in RRAC play.

History

The Saints were 18-9 against the Mustangs prior to the series.

Game one

The Saints battled back in the ninth inning to earn a walk-off win against the Mustangs in game one. The Mustangs took a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Tyler Vivier singled to scored Noah Rodriguez in the bottom of the frame to cut the deficit in half. Southwest slowly built the advantage to 5-1 and the game headed into the bottom of the ninth inning. Jackson Kalisky started the comeback with a two-run home run that scored Jacob Montejano. Noah Rodriguez followed with a single that scored two runs. Caimyn Holiday hit the game-winning single with two outs to score Sebastian Ledezma. Pablo Montante earned the win after pitching less than a full inning. Joshua Mendez started on the mound and went 7.2 innings with two strikeouts and five earned runs.

Game two

OLLU started the doubleheader on Saturday with another nail-biting win. The Saints led 5-2 after three innings with two home runs from Francisco Martinez. His first was an inside the park grand slam in the first inning and he followed with a solo home run in the third frame. The Mustangs stormed back to tie the game after the sixth inning. The game remained knotted and went to extra innings after the seventh frame was scoreless. Kalisky hit a game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth inning of the scheduled seven-inning game and gave the Saints a wild 7-6 victory. Kalisky finished batting 3-for-4 and Martinez added five RBIs. Devin Benavides got the win after going 3.2 innings in relief with four strikeouts.

Game three

The Saints ended the series with an exclamation point. They totaled 19 runs on 18 hits, including six RBIs from Kalisky. He tied the OLLU record for home runs in a single season with 12 after he hit one out in the sixth inning. Montejano shined by hitting 2-for-2 with five RBIs. Nine Saints players finished with at least one hit. The Saints won 19-4 with two home runs and two triples. Christopher Perez started on the mound and secured the win by going four innings with four strikeouts. Montante and Ram Maldonado pitched in relief. The Saints end the regular season on a seven-game winning streak.
