Saints Fall in Extra Innings to Victoria in RRAC Championships

STERLINGTON, LA. (May 5, 2023) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) baseball team lost in a close game to the University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) 3-2 in ten innings. The Saints earned a No. 3 seed in the tournament while the Jaguars entered as No. 6.

Head Coach Matt Piker said, "That was a tough game. We didn't do simple well and our opponent made us pay for it so hats off to them. We have a long way to go, and our backs are against the wall now. The players have risen to the challenge all year. For that reason, I can't wait to get back on the field."

The Saints were 24-15 against the Jaguars prior to the game.

Basics

The Saints let a 2-0 lead slip in the ninth inning and lost 3-2 in extra innings to UHV. Noah Rodriguez put the Saints on the board first with a single that scored Diego Zuniga. The game remained 1-0 until the eight frame when Jackson Kalisky brought home Caimyn Holiday with a single. The Jaguars tied the game in the ninth inning with two runs. The Saints hit a batter to bring in one run and then a fielder's choice knotted the contest. The Jaguars took their momentum into extra innings with a triple that scored one run. OLLU was unable to extend the game in the bottom of the inning. Joshua Mendez started on the mound and went seven innings with eight strikeouts. Devin Benavides suffered the loss in relief with three innings pitched and three earned runs. Benavides totaled three strikeouts. The Saints had six hits with two coming from Christian Martinez.
