Saints Baseball Splits Series Versus Wayland Baptist

SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 2, 2024) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) baseball team split a four-game series against Wayland Baptist University (WBU) this week. The Saints move to 3-4 overall while the Pioneers are now 2-6.

Game One

The Saints won the first game of the series with great pitching from Devin Benavides. Wayland Baptist took an early 1-0 lead in the third inning, but the Saints responded quickly. OLLU put up two runs in the bottom of the frame. Nicholas Alonzo scored on an error by the left fielder and Caimyn Holiday scored while Jack Kalisky stole second base. Vincent Banda hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Kalisky later in the sixth inning and the Saints held on to win 3-1. Benavides pitched a complete game allowing only one hit with five strikeouts.

Game Two

OLLU struggled in the second game of the series. They scored one run on two hits and lost 7-1. Banda hit a sacrifice fly to score Kalisky in the third inning. The Pioneers scored four runs in the first inning and added three more runs throughout the game. Donovan Gamez suffered the loss after going 0.1 innings with two earned runs. Austin Mitchell, Matthew Sanchez and Ethan Garza all pitched in relief.

Game Three

The Saints started the Friday doubleheader with a 3-1 victory. The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when OLLU plated two runs. Banda continued to hit well and drove in Kalisky and Brandon Betancourt. He hit a triple to right field in the sixth inning that scored Jimmy Valle. Banda was responsible for all three RBIs. Noah De La Riva started on the mound for the Saints and went five innings with five strikeouts. Chase Dunn earned the save after two innings of relief.

Game Four

The Pioneers took game four to split the series. They scored six runs on five hits and won 6-1. The Saints tallied four hits with Banda scoring the lone run in the second inning off a single by Aiden Gonzalez. Christian Perez took the loss on the mound after four innings with three earned runs. Roman Rodriguez and Kalisky pitched in relief. Banda, Criztian Delgado and Valle had the other three hits for the Saints.
