Baseball Drops Two of Three Against Southwest

HOBBS, N.M. (Feb. 16, 2024) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) baseball team won one of three games against the University of the Southwest (USW) on Thursday and Friday. The Saints move to 7-7 overall and start Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) play at 1-2. The Mustangs improve to 11-4 overall and 2-1 in conference.

Head Coach Matt Piker commented, "We did a good job on Thursday. We had two good outings from our starting pitchers. There were situations that we didn't execute that proved costly. We have to play better, and I have to coach better. The assistants did a good job and got our players ready to go."

History

The Saints were 22-8 against the Mustangs prior to the series.

Game one

The Saints won the first matchup of the series in a back-and-forth contest. Southwest led 1-0 after the first inning on a run scored during a double play. The Saints responded in the top of the second inning with two runs. Kobey Allison doubled to score Criztian Delgado and Betancourt followed with an RBI single. Jack Kalisky grew OLLU's lead to two after a single that scored Betancourt in the fourth inning. The Mustangs shrunk the Saints lead in the sixth inning to one run. Delgado scored an insurance run in the seventh inning on a fielder's choice. The Saints held on to win 4-2 backed by eight hits. Devin Benavides pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts to earn the win.

Game two

The Mustangs grabbed the second game of the doubleheader on Thursday. The nine-inning contest was scoreless until the fifth inning when Caimyn Holiday recorded an RBI on a ground out that brought home Allison. The Mustangs plated a run in the sixth inning to tie the game, but the Saints took another lead in the seventh inning. Nicholas Alonzo singled to score Aiden Gonzalez and put the Saints back on top 2-1. Southwest responded immediately in the top of the eighth inning on an RBI single. The Saints lost in heartbreaking fashion in the ninth inning when the Mustangs scored the game-winning run with two outs on a single. Starting pitcher Noah De La Riva went eight innings with five strikeouts and two earned runs. Chase Dunn suffered the loss after he entered the game in the ninth inning.

Game three

The Saints struggled in the series finale. They allowed 15 runs on 18 hits. The Saints tallied double-digit hits as well, but scored five runs as a result. OLLU led 1-0 after the first inning on a single by Kalisky to score Betancourt. The Mustangs plated 13 runs in the following inning and won 15-5. Alonzo finished with two RBIs and Kalisky batted 3-for-4. Starting pitcher Christian Perez suffered the loss after allowing five earned runs on five hits.
