Baseball Falls Short in Conference Series Versus LSU-Alexandria

SAN ANTONIO (April 13, 2024) - The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) baseball team took one of three games against LSU-Alexandria (LSUA) this weekend. The Saints move to 21-22 overall and 10-14 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Generals jump to 17-18 overall and 14-9 in the RRAC.

History

The Saints were 12-17 against the Generals prior to the series.

Game one

The Saints lost 7-5 against the Generals in game one despite a comeback attempt late in the game. The Generals scored five runs in the fourth inning on two hits. They increased their lead to 7-0 in the sixth inning on two RBI singles. Nicholas Alonzo drove in the Saints first run in the bottom of the frame on a single. The Saints cut the deficit to two runs in the seventh inning. Diego Zuniga doubled with bases loaded that scored all three runners. Alonzo followed later in the inning with another RBI single to score Jimmy Valle. The Saints were unable to score in the final two innings. Devin Benavides suffered the loss after going 3.2 innings. The Generals scored five runs while Benavides was on the mound but four were unearned. Chase Dunn, Ethan Garza and Matthew Sanchez pitched in relief. Sanchez struck out four batters in 3.1 innings of work. Alonzo batted 3-for-3 and the Saints totaled nine hits.

Game two

The Saints struggled in the second game of the series. They produced two hits while allowing 13. Vincent Banda, Alonzo and Brandon Betancourt were responsible for the Saints three RBIs. The Generals won 8-3 with seven RBIs. Esai Puente suffered the loss after pitching only one inning with one earned run. Dunn pitched in relief for a second straight game, followed by Donovan Gamez and Roman Rodriguez. Dunn struck out three batters and Gamez retired six. 

Game three

The Saints avoided a sweep by winning the series finale. OLLU erupted for 11 runs in the first three innings. They scored three in the first frame with RBIs from Jack Kalisky and Banda. The squad added five runs in the second inning. Zuniga doubled to score D'Artagnan Perez-Padron and Betancourt was later hit by a pitch with bases loaded. Kobey Allison doubled in the same inning to score three runners. The Saints put up three runs in the third inning and two in the fifth frame. They won 13-0 with 13 hits. Nine different Saints players had at least one hit. Noah De La Riva picked up his sixth win of the season by going six innings with four strikeouts. Kalisky pitched the final inning and struck out three of four batters faced.

The Saints host Huston-Tillotson University for the last homestand of the season starting on April 19. The Saints will honor the senior class on April 20.
