Baseball Scores 25 Runs in Sweep of Huston-Tillotson

SAN ANTONIO (April 19, 2024) - The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) baseball squad swept Huston-Tillotson University (HTU) in a three-game Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) series. The Saints improve to 24-22 overall and 13-14 in the RRAC. The Rams drop to 15-24 overall and 5-18 in conference.

History

The Saints were 19-3 against the Rams prior to the series.

Game one

The Saints downed HTU in the first game of the series on Thursday night. They opened the scoring in the second inning by putting up six runs. Alejandro Rodriguez, Brett Atkinson, D'Artagnan Perez-Padron, Diego Zuniga and Jack Kalisky picked up RBIs. The runs in the second frame were all scored with two outs. The Saints continued to hit well in the third inning. Rodriguez, Atkinson and Kalisky tallied RBIs once again in a five-run inning. The Rams scored two runs in the fifth inning to make it 11-2. Zuniga hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning that sealed a 12-2 run-rule victory. Devin Benavides earned the win on the mound after going five innings with six strikeouts while allowing only two hits. Benavides is now 7-4 on the year. Hector Rogerio III pitched the final two innings and didn't allow a hit. OLLU has scored 25 runs in the previous two games.

Game two

The Saints held off a late comeback attempt by the Rams in game two. Rodriguez opened the scoring in the second inning with an RBI single that scored Kobey Allison. Vincent Banda added another run in the following inning with a double that scored Nicholas Alonzo. The Saints tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning. The Rams scored two runs in the final inning, but the Saints escaped with a 4-2 victory. Donovan Gamez grabbed the win after pitching a complete game with six strikeouts. Seven different OLLU players recorded at least one hit. 

Game three

The Saints closed the series with an impressive 9-1 victory. Kalisky and Banda had RBIs in the first inning as the Saints plated three runs. The lone run from the Rams came in the second inning when they scored on a wild pitch. Kalisky hit a solo home run in the third inning and Caimyn Holiday later hit a triple that scored all three runners. Holiday set OLLU's career triples record with 10. He also broke his previous record of six triples in a season. The Saints added on two more runs in the sixth inning and won the nine-inning contest by eight runs. Noah De La Riva improved to 7-5 on the season after going four innings with four strikeouts. Kalisky pitched three innings in relief and Chase Dunn finished the game in the final two innings.
