Saints Drop Series Finale to USAO
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Our Lady of the Lake (OLLU) baseball team dropped to 1-2 on the season after falling to the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (USAO) in the series finale on Saturday afternoon. Two big innings from the Drovers proved to be the difference in the 13-2 loss for the Saints.
USAO got to OLLU starter Domenic Martinez early as they plated five runs in the opening frame. Martinez appeared to settle in towards the end of the first as he ended the long inning with a strike out. Martinez would go on to strike out the side in the second inning. OLLU closed the gap in the second inning as Jack Kalisky led the inning off with a double down the right field line. Carlos Gusman reached on an error by the Drover shortstop, putting runners at first and third with nobody out. The Saints' first run came on an Aiden Gonzalez groundout that scored Kalisky. Gusman came around to score on an RBI-single by Brandon Betancourt to make it a 5-2 game after two complete innings.
The top half of the third was costly for the Saints as the Drovers brought 10 batters to the plate, scoring six runs in the inning to extend their lead to 11-2.
The middle innings were quite as the Drovers and Saints held each other scoreless. The Drovers scored two more runs in the top of the seventh to make it 13-2. In the bottom of the seventh, the Saints stranded Brett Atkinson after he reached on a one-out single through the left side, ending the game via the 10-run rule.
OLLU pitchers fanned seven Drover hitters in the loss.
