OLLU Men's Basketball Falls to No. 18-ranked WBU

PLAINVIEW, TEXAS (Nov. 12, 2022) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team lost to No. 18-ranked Wayland Baptist University (WBU) 94-81 on Saturday night. The Saints drop to 2-2 overall while the Pioneers improve to 3-0.

Head Coach Chris Dial commented, "This was a tough split on the road trip. We put ourselves in a position to beat a good team tonight. Poor execution and not valuing the ball hurt us. We need to play sound defense for the entirety of every game. We have lots to learn from and are looking forward to getting back home."

History

The Saints were 5-2 against the Pioneers prior to the game.

Basics

The Saints played a good first half against one of the best teams in the NAIA. Tommie Law totaled nine points and Ruben Monzon had nine rebounds. The Saints shot 40 percent from the field and limited the Pioneers to 37.5 percent. The Saints led by one point at halftime after WBU scored the final four points of the half.

The Pioneers offense came to life in the second half. They shot 62.1 percent from the field and hit 5-of-6 three-pointers. The Saints continued to shoot well but were outmatched from three-point range. WBU rallied for 58 points in the second frame to eventually win 94-81.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Three Saints players had a team-high 16 points each. Monzon earned a double-double for the third straight games with 13 rebounds and 11 points. Law led the Saints with five assists.

RJ Mason led WBU with 24 points. Parrish Hewitt grabbed nine rebounds for the Pioneers. Hewitt also led the team with five assists.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 25-of-58 shooting for 43.1 percent, 8-of-21 from three-point range for 38.1 percent and 23-of-31 from the free-throw line for 74.2 percent. WBU shot 30-of-61 for 49.2 percent, 10-of-16 three pointers for 62.5 percent and 24-of-28 from the free-throw line for 85.7 percent.

The Saints grabbed 39 rebounds while WBU collected 29. OLLU forced 14 turnovers and committed 22.
