OLLU men's basketball downed by LSUS 86-73

SAN ANTONIO (Dec. 1, 2022) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team fell to No. 20-ranked LSU-Shreveport (LSUS) 86-73 on Thursday night. The Saints drop to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) play. The Pilots improve to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in the RRAC.

The Saints were 10-13 against the Pilots prior to the game.

Basics

The Saints shot well but were outscored by the Pilots on Thursday. OLLU shot over 40 percent from the field in the first half. The Pilots had two players with double-digit scoring at the break. Oscar Maldonado led the Saints with 10 points at halftime.

OLLU's defense played better in the second half by limiting the Pilots to 30 points. Ruben Monzon joined Maldonado with double-digit scoring and both players had four rebounds. Sacade Kasamba had two steals in the second half and the Pilots turned the ball over nine times. LSUS won 86-73 and rank ninth in the NAIA with 14 offensive rebounds per game.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Monzon led the Saints with 14 points. Monzon also had a team-high seven rebounds. Three different players had three assists each for the Saints.

Jalen Brooks led LSUS with 20 points. Brooks grabbed 19 rebounds to earn a double-double. Brooks also led the team with four assists.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 30-of-59 shooting for 50.8 percent, 9-of-21 from three-point range for 42.9 percent and 4-of-9 from the free-throw line for 44.4 percent. LSUS shot 36-of-66 for 54.5 percent, 4-of-14 three pointers for 28.6 percent and 10-of-17 from the free-throw line for 58.8 percent.

The Saints grabbed 24 rebounds while LSUS collected 38. OLLU forced 14 turnovers and committed 15.
