Saints Offense Leads to 80-77 Victory Over Mount Vernon

SAN ANTONIO (Dec. 13, 2022) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team fought off a comeback effort by Mount Vernon Nazarene University (MVNU) on Tuesday night. The Saints won 80-77 to improve to 6-5 overall. The Cougars drop to 5-6 on the season.

History

This was the first meeting between the two programs.

Basics

The Saints offense came to life on Tuesday night against the Cougars. OLLU shot over 50 percent from the field and from three-point range in the first half. Tommie Law totaled 15 points in the first frame and Georges Darwiche added four assists. The Saints limited Mount Vernon to 34.5 percent shooting from the field and forced six turnovers.

The 14-point halftime lead slowly dwindled after the break. The Cougars never led in the second half but cut the advantage to three with 47 seconds remaining. Ruben Monzon hit key free throws with four seconds left and the Saints fended off Mount Vernon's tying attempt.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Law led the Saints with a season-high 25 points. Rob Gil grabbed a team-high four rebounds. Ellis Jones led the team with five assists.

Kyle Kegley led Mount Vernon with 20 points. Kegley also grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds to earn a double-double. Milton Gage and Carter Pline had three assists apiece.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 27-of-56 shooting for 48.2 percent, 11-of-29 from three-point range for 37.9 percent and 15-of-20 from the free-throw line for 75 percent. Mount Vernon shot 25-of-51 for 49 percent, 7-of-23 three pointers for 30.4 percent and 20-of-25 from the free-throw line for 80 percent.

The Saints grabbed 18 rebounds while Mount Vernon collected 35. OLLU forced 16 turnovers and committed seven.
