Saints Fall Short Against Texarkana's Scoring Spree
TEXARKANA, TEXAS (Jan. 7, 2023) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team lost to Texas A&M University-Texarkana (TAMUT) 110-95 on Saturday. The Saints fall to 9-7 overall and 4-4 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Eagles improve to 13-3 overall and 6-2 in the RRAC.
Head Coach Chris Dial said, "We played a better team tonight. We traveled to Texarkana and are leaving with a huge dose of humility. We are looking forward to getting home and getting ready for Huston-Tillotson on Tuesday."
History
The Saints were 1-1 against the Eagles prior to the game.
Basics
The Saints had a tough first half offensively. They shot 15.4 percent from the three-point line and had 14 turnovers. The Eagles capitalized on the turnovers by totaling 52 points. Texarkana grabbed six offensive rebounds in the first frame and headed to halftime with a 52-30 lead.
OLLU flipped the switch in the second half. They totaled 65 points on 59.5 percent shooting from the field. Ruben Monzon, Xavier Purnell and Paul Minjoth all had double-digit points. The Eagles continued to shoot well and outlasted the Saints 110-95.
Offensive/defensive standouts
Monzon led the Saints with 21 points. Rob Gil and Oscar Maldonado grabbed a team-high four rebounds each. Tommie Law and Purnell led the team with three assists each.
Kobe Powel led Texarkana with 21 points. Powel also grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds for a double-double. Powel and Damani Whitlock finished with five assists apiece.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 32-of-62 shooting for 51.6 percent, 13-of-29 from three-point range for 44.8 percent and 18-of-22 from the free-throw line for 81.8 percent. Texarkana shot 36-of-63 for 57.1 percent, 13-of-27 three pointers for 48.1 percent and 25-of-32 from the free-throw line for 78.1 percent.
The Saints grabbed 18 rebounds while Texarkana collected 39.
