Saints defeat HTU behind superb three-point shooting

SAN ANTONIO (Jan. 11, 2023) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team used strong three-point shooting to defeat Huston Tillotson University (HTU) 84-71 on Tuesday. The Saints improve to 10-7 overall and 5-4 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Rams fall to 5-13 overall and 3-13 in the RRAC.

History

The Saints were 19-3 against the Rams prior to the game.

Basics

The Saints rose above .500 in the RRAC by defeating HTU on Tuesday night. The Saints limited the Rams to 32.4 percent shooting from the field in the first half. They also held the Rams to 16.7 percent shooting from three-point range. Daniel Helterhoff totaled eight points and grabbed five rebounds. The Saints led 42-31 at halftime behind 57.7 percent shooting from the field.

The Saints also scored 42 points in the second half. They were relentless from three-point range by hitting 7-of-10. OLLU also was strong down low by grabbing 10 offensive rebounds throughout the game. OLLU ranks fourth in the RRAC standings after the victory.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Paul Minjoth and Rob Gil led the Saints with 14 points each. Ruben Monzon grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds and added 11 points for a double-double. Ellis Jones led the team with four assists.

Jimmie Kelly led Huston-Tillotson with 21 points. Shannon Robinson grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Three Rams players finished with two assists each.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 28-of-48 shooting for 58.3 percent, 10-of-20 from three-point range for 50 percent and 18-of-27 from the free-throw line for 66.7 percent. Huston-Tillotson shot 26-of-57 for 45.6 percent, 3-of-16 three pointers for 18.8 percent and 16-of-24 from the free-throw line for 66.7 percent.

The Saints grabbed 37 rebounds while Huston-Tillotson collected 18.
