Saints Comeback Bid Falls Short Against USW

HOBBS, N.M. (Jan. 15, 2023) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team fell in a nail-biting game against the University of the Southwest (USW) 91-88 on Saturday. The Saints drop to 10-8 overall and 5-5 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Mustangs jump to 9-8 overall and 5-5 in RRAC play.

Head Coach Chris Dial said, "We left an important game in New Mexico. We needed to defend and do our jobs individually and collectively but failed to do so. Our mental and emotional preparation needs to be better. We have a lot to improve on. We will get back to work to get ready for the Louisiana road trip."

History

The Saints were 18-6 against the Mustangs prior to the game.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Ruben Monzon led the Saints with 24 points. Monzon also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Rob Gil led the team with seven assists.

Jahvonta Jones led Southwest with 19 points. Jamell Bradley and Qua King grabbed a team-high five rebounds each. Tyler Watkins finished with seven assists.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 30-of-57 shooting for 52.6 percent, 8-of-22 from three-point range for 36.4 percent and 20-of-29 from the free-throw line for 69 percent. Southwest shot 30-of-55 for 54.5 percent, 10-of-24 three pointers for 41.7 percent and 21-of-25 from the free-throw line for 84 percent.

The Saints grabbed 23 rebounds while Southwest collected 27.
