Saints' Turnovers Sting in 85-70 Loss to PQC

SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 9, 2023) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team were defeated by Paul Quinn College (PQC) 85-70 on Thursday for their third straight loss. The Saints drop to 13-12 overall and 8-9 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Tigers improve to 11-7 overall and 9-7 in RRAC play.

History

The Saints were 21-2 against the Tigers prior to the game.

Basics

The Saints struggled defensively against the Tigers on Thursday. OLLU was held to 26 points in the first half and committed 13 turnovers. Both teams shot 50 percent from the field in the first frame and Daniel Helterhoff had eight points. The Tigers had two players with double-digit points heading into halftime.

The Saints outscored the Tigers in the second half but were unable to overcome the halftime deficit. Paul Quinn shot over 50 percent from the field in the second half and grabbed 11 rebounds. The Saints failed to have a player finish with double-digit points. OLLU has three conference games remaining before the regular season concludes.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Helterhoff led the Saints with 13 points. Ruben Monzon and Marvis Odia grabbed five rebounds apiece. Georges Darwiche had four assists.

Trevoin Shaw led PQC with 24 points. De'Auntre Davis grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Steven Tynes finished with five assists.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 24-of-48 shooting for 50 percent, 5-of-20 from three-point range for 25 percent and 17-of-25 from the free-throw line for 68 percent. PQC shot 33-of-63 for 52.4 percent, 7-of-22 three pointers for 31.8 percent and 12-of-18 from the free-throw line for 66.7 percent.

The Saints grabbed 32 rebounds while the Tigers collected 26.
