Saints Falter in Second Half Against Southwest

SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 18, 2023) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team fell to the University of the Southwest (USW) 88-80 to close play in the regular season. The Saints drop to 13-15 overall and 8-12 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Mustangs improve to 12-15 overall and 8-12 in RRAC play.

After the game, the university honored seniors Ellis Jones, Oscar Maldonado, Georges Darwiche, Jonathan Sanchez and Ruben Monzon.

History

The Saints were 18-7 against the Mustangs prior to the game.

Basics

The Saints shot great in the first half. They went 51.7 percent from the field and 58.3 percent from the three-point line. The Mustangs' offense also impressed with 38 points. USW outrebounded the Saints in the first half, but OLLU took a six-point lead to halftime. Maldonado had double-digit points in the first half.

The Mustangs came out firing in the second half. They totaled 50 points by shooting 66.7 percent from the field. They also hit 3-of-5 three-pointers and grabbed nine offensive rebounds. The Saints had eight turnovers in the second half, but also shot 56 percent from the field. The Saints were unable to match the Mustangs scoring and only went to the free-throw line six times in the second half. The Mustangs hit 11 free throws and won 88-80. The Saints have lost six straight games heading into the RRAC Tournament next week.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Monzon led the Saints with 19 points. Monzon also led the team with five rebounds. Three different Saints had three assists apiece.

Jahvonta Jones led Southwest with 21 points. Miles Macadory grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Tre Thomas and Qua King had four assists each.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 29-of-54 shooting for 53.7 percent, 11-of-24 from three-point range for 45.8 percent and 11-of-16 from the free-throw line for 68.8 percent. USW shot 33-of-52 for 63.5 percent, 8-of-16 three pointers for 50 percent and 14-of-17 from the free-throw line for 82.4 percent.

The Saints grabbed 18 rebounds while the Mustangs collected 27.
