Men's Basketball Shocks No. 10-ranked Wayland Baptist

SAN ANTONIO (Nov. 9, 2023) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team downed No. 10-ranked Wayland Baptist University (WBU) on Thursday night 84-73. The Saints improve to 1-3 while the Pioneers drop to 1-3.

History

The Saints were 5-3 against the Pioneers prior to the game.

Basics

The Saints upset No. 10-ranked WBU on Thursday night. Both teams boasted their offense in the first half. The Saints shot 70.8 percent from the field and 50 percent from three-point range. Lonzo Rand had 11 points in the first frame and the Saints went into halftime down two points.

The Saints started to run with the lead with under two minutes remaining. OLLU was disciplined at the free throw line when the Pioneers were forced to foul. The Saints hit eight of nine free throws in the final minute. Rand, Trey Law, Rob Gil and Olivier Yannis Borgol all had double-digit points.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Rand led the Saints with 22 points. Breion Powell tallied a team-high 11 rebounds. Gil had four assists for the Saints.

Meikkel Murray led WBU with 17 points. Brett Leach grabbed seven rebounds. Leach also led the team with four assists.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 27-of-48 shooting for 56.3 percent, 5-of-17 from three-point range for 29.4 percent and 25-of-33 from the free-throw line for 75.8 percent. WBU shot 28-of-59 for 47.5 percent, 8-of-20 three pointers for 40 percent and 9-of-16 from the free-throw line for 56.3 percent.

The Saints grabbed 31 rebounds while WBU collected 28. Both teams committed 19 turnovers.
