Men's Basketball Comeback Falls Short in Loss to JCU

HAWKINS, TEXAS (Dec. 1, 2023) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team fought back in the second half but lost to Jarvis Christian University (JCU) 73-70 on Thursday night. The Saints drop to 3-4 overall and start Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) competition at 0-1. The Bulldogs jump to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in conference.

Head Coach Chris Dial said, "This was a disappointing loss. We missed a lot of shots you must make on the road to win, especially free throws. Jarvis played tough and deserved the win. We have to shift our focus to the game on Saturday against Texas College."

History

The Saints were 19-6 against the Bulldogs prior to the game.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Trey Law led the Saints with 24 points. Daniel Helterhoff had 12 rebounds and added 10 points for a double-double. Law tallied four assists for the Saints.

James Phillip Russell led JCU with 18 points. Russell also grabbed six rebounds. Joshua Cooper led the team with six assists.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 30-of-52 shooting for 57.7 percent, 2-of-14 from three-point range for 14.3 percent and 8-of-15 from the free-throw line for 53.3 percent. JCU shot 26-of-40 for 65 percent, 10-of-18 three pointers for 55.6 percent and 11-of-13 from the free-throw line for 84.6 percent.

The Saints grabbed 38 rebounds while JCU collected 33. The Saints committed 15 turnovers and forced seven.
