Men's Basketball Downs Texarkana 77-74

SAN ANTONIO (Dec. 16, 2023) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team outlasted Texas A&M University-Texarkana (TAMUT) 77-74 on Saturday. The Saints improve to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Eagles drop to 3-6 overall and 1-3 in conference.

The Saints were 1-4 against the Eagles prior to the matchup.

Basics

The Saints offensive hit on all cylinders in the first half. They shot over 60 percent in three pointers and field goals. Rob Gil had 14 points and Breion Powell collected seven rebounds. OLLU had a 10-point advantage at halftime and Trey Law assisted on seven plays.

The Eagles outscored the Saints in the second half, but the Saints stayed strong in the final minutes. Texarkana shrunk the lead to three points with under five minutes remaining. The Saints defense stepped up and allowed only four points over the final four minutes. Powell made key free throws and a game-tying three-point attempt by the Eagles fell short with time running out. The Saints held on to win by three points and defeated the Eagles for the first time since 2020.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Gil led the Saints with 14 points. Powell grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds and added 13 points for a double-double. Law led OLLU with seven assists.

Levelle Zeigler led TAMUT with 21 points. Christopher Coley II grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Zeigler and Aman Measho had three assists each for the Eagles.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 28-of-59 shooting for 47.5 percent, 11-of-23 from three-point range for 47.8 percent and 10-of-14 from the free-throw line for 71.4 percent. TAMUT shot 27-of-66 for 40.9 percent, 9-of-23 three pointers for 39.1 percent and 11-of-12 from the free-throw line for 91.7 percent.

The Saints grabbed 31 rebounds while Texarkana collected 29.
