Saints Men Battle but Lose to Texas College

SAN ANTONIO (Jan. 27, 2024) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team fell short against Texas College (TC) 81-72 on Thursday. The Saints move to 8-11 overall and 5-8 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Steers improve to 15-5 overall and 11-3 in conference play.

History

The Saints were 17-9 against the Steers prior to the game.

Basics

The Saints matched the Steers pace in the first half. Both teams tallied 42 points and the Saints hit 46.2 percent of three-pointers. OLLU shot 39.1 percent from the field but hit 18-of-19 free throws. The Steers also shot well from the field at 52.2 percent and knocked down 77.8 percent of free throws. Paul Minjoth had 15 points at the break and Daniel Helterhoff had four rebounds.

OLLU struggled shooting in the second half. They were held to under 30 percent shooting from both the field and three-point range. The Saints hit 14 free throws, but it wasn't enough to match the Steers scoring. Nagee Jones was the difference maker in the second half by scoring 17 points for Texas College. The Steers won by nine points to reach 11 conference victories. Trey Law, Rob Gil and Helterhoff joined Minjoth with double-digit scoring.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Minjoth led the Saints with 20 points. Helterhoff grabbed seven rebounds for OLLU. Gil tallied four assists.

Jones led TC with 26 points. Qyrique Dabon grabbed seven rebounds for the Steers. Jones led the team with five assists.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 16-of-49 shooting for 32.7 percent, 8-of-20 from three-point range for 40 percent and 32-of-36 from the free-throw line for 88.9 percent. TC shot 23-of-49 for 46.9 percent, 6-of-17 three pointers for 35.3 percent and 29-of-35 from the free-throw line for 82.9 percent.

The Saints grabbed 26 rebounds while TC collected 27. The Saints forced 15 turnovers and committed 18.
