Trey Law's Buzzer Beater Gives OLLU a Win Over Paul Quinn

SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 8, 2024)  – A buzzer-beating three-pointer from Trey Law drove the Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball to an 87-84 victory over Paul Quinn College (PQC). The Saints are now 10-12 overall and 7-9 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC), while the Tigers fall to 6-13 overall and 6-10 in conference.

History

The Saints are 22-4 against Paul Quinn. Earlier this season, OLLU won 89-76.

Basics

The game was close for most of the first half and featured six ties. With 10 minutes remaining in the game, the Tigers took their biggest lead at 20-14, and they continued to dominate through halftime. The score was 39-38 in favor of the Tigers as the teams took the half-time break. The Saints kept the game close with threes from Paul Minjoth and baskets by Breion Powell. At the 13th minute, Powell's free throws put the Saints just four points away from the lead, but the Tigers were able to regroup and return to a 63-55 lead with 11 minutes left in the game. PQC reached a 10-point lead over the Saints, and after a technical foul called on the PQC coach, the Saints started to add to the scoreboard. Lonzo Rand sank a three-pointer with less than three minutes remaining to get the score to 78-80, and a fast break lay up from Law tied the score at 80. After a steal from Law, he raced to the basket with a phenomenal dunk to give the Saints the 82-80 lead.  A free throw from PQC's Richard Lemboye tied the score at 84. With a few seconds remaining, Law connected from three-point range to win the game.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Trey Law, who has made just five three-pointers this year, made his only attempt from that range to win the game. He went 9-of-10 from the field and 4-of-6 from the charity stripe to score 23 points. Lonzo Rand contributed 14 points, while Breion Powell added 10.  

Richard Lemboye scored 26 points for the Tigers, while Norris Williams scored 13 and added 13 rebounds.  

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 34-of-57 shooting for 59.6 percent, 5-of-16 from three-point range for 31.3 percent, and hit 14-of-19 free throws for 73.7 percent. PQC shot 31-of-55 for 56.4 percent, 3-of-15 three pointers for 20 percent and 19-of-26 from the free-throw line for 73.1 percent.

The Saints grabbed 30 rebounds while PQC collected 23. The Saints forced 10 turnovers and committed 18.
