Saints Men Mark Season-High Points in Win Over Southwest

SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 10, 2024) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team downed the University of the Southwest (USW) 103-92 on Saturday. The Saints jump to 11-12 overall and 8-9 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Mustangs fall to 6-14 overall and 6-12 in the RRAC.

History

The Saints were 18-9 against the Mustangs prior to the game.

Basics

The Saints scored 53 points in the first half backed by 65.6 percent shooting from the field. Trey Law and Daniel Helterhoff both had 15 points in the frame while Rob Gil added four assists. OLLU's defense also played well by limiting the Mustangs to 4-of-12 shooting from the three-point line. The Saints led by 11 points heading into halftime.

Both teams scored 50 points in the second half. The Saints continued to be aggressive on offense leading to 19-of-25 free-throw shooting. The Mustangs came within five points with 1:34 remaining in the contest. The Saints hit key free throws down the stretch to hold on and win by 11. Six different Saints players had double-digit scoring and 103 points marked the most in a game by the squad this year. The Saints qualified for the RRAC Tournament with the victory.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Helterhoff led the Saints with 21 points. Helterhoff also grabbed nine rebounds. Gil tallied seven assists.

Rahkiem Petterson led Southwest with 24 points. Petterson also had eight rebounds. Anthony Scott led the team with six assists.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 35-of-57 shooting for 61.4 percent, 6-of-15 from three-point range for 40 percent and 27-of-36 from the free-throw line for 75 percent. USW shot 28-of-58 for 48.3 percent, 8-of-21 three pointers for 38.1 percent and 28-of-42 from the free-throw line for 66.7 percent.

The Saints grabbed 28 rebounds while USW collected 32. The Saints forced 10 turnovers and committed nine.
