Men's Basketball Upsets LSU-Alexandria 85-80

SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 15, 2024) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team rallied in the second half to beat LSU-Alexandria (LSUA) 85-80 on Thursday. The Saints improve to 12-12 overall and 9-9 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Generals drop to 17-6 overall and 15-3 in the RRAC. The victory snapped LSU-Alexandria's 12-game winning streak.

History

The Saints were 3-14 against the Generals prior to the game.

Basics

The Saints were outscored in the first half but were able to draw 11 fouls. OLLU hit 16-of-17 free throws and Trey Law hit all seven of his shots. The Generals shot 46.2 percent from the field and led by four points at the break. Law had double-digit points in the first half. The Saints limited the Generals to 23.1 percent shooting from three-point range.

OLLU's offense came alive in the second half. They shot over 40 percent from both the field and three-point range. They continued to force fouls and hit 22 free throws. The game was tied with just over one minute remaining. Lonzo Rand hit key free throws down the stretch and Trey Law's layup gave the Saints the permanent lead. OLLU won by five points for their third straight win.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Rand and Law led the Saints with 16 points apiece. Xavier Purnell also grabbed seven rebounds. Rob Gil tallied five assists.

Kashie Natt led LSUA with 19 points. Natt also had 10 rebounds for a double-double. Jason Perry led the team with three assists.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 20-of-50 shooting for 40 percent, 7-of-20 from three-point range for 35 percent and 38-of-47 from the free-throw line for 80.9 percent. LSUA shot 28-of-65 for 43.1 percent, 7-of-24 three pointers for 29.2 percent and 17-of-20 from the free-throw line for 85 percent.

The Saints grabbed 31 rebounds while LSUA collected 36. The Saints forced 15 turnovers and committed 14.
