Men's Basketball Closes Regular Season in Win Over HTU

SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 27, 2024) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team used strong offense to down Huston-Tillotson University (HTU) 94-87 on Tuesday. The Saints finish the regular season at 14-14 overall and 11-11 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Rams conclude the season at 8-20 overall and 6-16 in conference.

The Saints were 21-4 against the Rams prior to the matchup.

Basics

The Saints put up 45 points in the first half backed by 60 percent shooting from the field. OLLU also hit half of their three-pointers and went 5-of-6 from the free throw line. They forced eight turnovers by the Rams and Rob Gil had double-digit points at the break. The Saints led by three points at halftime.

OLLU went 83.3 percent from three-point range and 61.5 percent from the field in the second half. The Rams kept the game close until the three-minute mark. The Saints drew fouls with aggressive offense and hit key free throws. OLLU won by seven points and will face LSU-Alexandria in the first round of the RRAC Tournament. The Saints honored Head Coach Chris Dial prior to the game. Dial has coached the Saints since 2018 and will be the head coach at Texas A&M University-San Antonio after this season concludes.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Gil led the Saints with 20 points. Trey Law grabbed eight rebounds. Gil also had a team-high four assists.

Auston Chatman led HTU with 29 points. Charles Hallmon had a team-high seven rebounds. Tyrell Fowler led the team with four assists.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 34-of-56 shooting for 60.7 percent, 9-of-14 from three-point range for 64.3 percent and 17-of-22 from the free-throw line for 77.3 percent. HTU shot 30-of-62 for 48.4 percent, 5-of-19 three pointers for 26.3 percent and 22-of-27 from the free-throw line for 81.5 percent.

The Saints grabbed 31 rebounds while HTU collected 21. OLLU forced 11 turnovers and committed 14.
