Men's Basketball Concludes Season in Loss to LSU-Shreveport

ALEXANDRIA, LA. (March 1, 2024) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team ended the 2023-2024 season with an 84-71 loss to LSU-Shreveport (LSUS) in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) Quarterfinals. The Saints were the No. 5 seed, and the Pilots are the four seed. OLLU finishes the season with a 14-15 overall record and 11-11 mark in the RRAC.

Head Coach Chris Dial commented, "The team fought in this one. It was a tough way to finish a tough year, but I appreciate this group. I love these young men and I'm excited to watch them continue to grow and develop as student-athletes and more importantly young men. I hope everyone at Our Lady of the Lake University knows how much I value and appreciate them. The school will always occupy a significant place in my heart."

History

The Saints were 12-15 against the Pilots prior to the game.

Basics

The first half was a low-scoring affair. The Pilots hit 51.6 percent of their field goals but struggled from the three-point line and field goal line. Trey Law had double digit points in the first half and Daniel Helterhoff added nine. The Saints had 38.9 percent shooting from the field. The Pilots led by two points at the break.

The Pilots stepped up their offense in the second half. They shot 60 percent from three-point range with three players marking double digit points. Both squads were disciplined by turning the ball over less than five times in the half. Trey Law scored his 1,000th point as a Saint in the second half and led the team with 22 points. The Saints lost by 13 points to end the season. Dial will be leaving for the head coaching position at Texas A&M University-San Antonio later this month.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Law led the Saints with 22 points. Law also had eight rebounds. Lonzo Rand and Rob Gil tallied three assists apiece for the Saints.

Calvin Carpenter led LSUS with 22 points. Josh LeBlanc grabbed 13 rebounds. Paul King led the Pilots with three assists.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 24-of-69 shooting for 34.8 percent, 6-of-23 from three-point range for 26.1 percent and 17-of-24 from the free-throw line for 70.8 percent. LSUS shot 30-of-63 for 47.6 percent, 5-of-12 three pointers for 41.7 percent and 19-of-29 from the free-throw line for 65.5 percent.

OLLU grabbed 39 rebounds while the Pilots collected 44. The Saints committed 11 turnovers and forced 13.
