Saints Men Take Fifth Place at San Antonio Shootout

SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 20, 2024) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's golf team finished in fifth place out of eight teams after three rounds at the San Antonio Shootout. The tournament was sponsored by NCAA D3 Schreiner University at TPC San Antonio. The squads played one round and then nine holes on Monday on the Canyons Course. The teams played on Oaks Course on the third round on Tuesday.

Head Coach Arnie Martinez commented, "TPC was a great test of golf. It's always fun to play the same course the PGA Tour players play. We definitely left a lot out there. We struggled a bit off the start. It's tough to fall behind and try to make up strokes with how hard of a course this is. The team battled back and responded well on Tuesday. The Oaks Course is one of the hardest courses on tour. The team was committed and that's a huge reason why we improved in the last round. Congrats to Oliver Gaisford on a top six finish and Massimo Garcia on a top 12 finish. We know what we need to work on as a team to be ready for next week. Go Saints."

The winner was Wayland Baptist University at 753, followed by Benedictine University-Mesa at 760, Oklahoma City University at 768, and Bellevue University at 776. The Saints took fifth place at 792, followed by Grand View University at 803, Mount Mercy University at 807 and SCAD Atlanta at 811.

Leading the way for the Saints was Gaisford with a three-round 81/36/72=189 for a tie for sixth place. Massimo Garcia totaled 78/37/78=193 for a tie for 12th place. Sergio Garcia shot a 86/41/79=206 for a tie for 29th place. Victor Peña Cortes tallied 86/41/82=209 and Jake Casias shot a 81/44/84=209 for a tie for 31st place.
