Saints Men's Soccer Battle to Win 4-1 Over Paul Quinn

SAN ANTONIO (Sept. 30, 2023) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's soccer team played a rough match against Paul Quinn College (PQC) and won 4-1 in a Red River Athletic Conference matchup. The Saints improve to 3-5-1 and 3-2-1 in conference, while PQC drops to 0-8 overall and 0-5 in conference.

The Saints are 3-1-2 against the Tigers. The Saints tied with the Tigers in 2021 and 2022 at 1-1.

Basics

The Saints kept play on their side of the field for most of the first half. They took eight shots through the 40th minute when Victor Villegas scored on an assist from Samuel Villegas. Samuel Villegas took a penalty kick about four minutes later, but missed, and he immediately took a header on the deflection to score a goal to give the Saints the 2-0 lead.

PQC started the second period with a goal at the 46th minute from William Cortez. The yellow card extravaganza began shortly thereafter with PQC's Juan Ambriz, Johathan Menez and Marcos Ambriz were shown cards just seconds after each other. The Saints followed with their third goal, this one from Stan Driessen on an assist from Louis Nicholson. A minute later, PQC's William Cortez received a yellow card. Victor Villegas was then assessed a red card because of a flagrant foul. At the 78th minute, Juan Ambriz was show a red for a rough tackle. Both teams now had 10 players on the field, but another red was shown to Fiston Ishimwe for a flagrant foul. Samuel Villegas followed with his second goal of the game to give the Saints the 4-1 lead. The Tigers were now down to eight players on the field after Juan Mendoza was show a red at the 81st minute. OLLU's Cristian Govea-Mireles received the last yellow card and the game ended with the Saints winning 4-1.

Inside the box score

The Saints had 16 shots and nine shots on goal, while the Tigers logged four shots and three on goal.

OLLU recorded 10 corner kicks and the Tigers took four. PQC was assessed four yellow cards and three red cards. OLLU received one red card and one yellow card.

OLLU's Dominic Pena had two saves and earned his third win of the season. PQC's Andrew Martinez logged five saves.
