OLLU's Kyllian Savary Claims NAIA Gulf ITA Regional Championship in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS (Sept. 29-Oct. 1, 2023) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's tennis team competed at the 2023 NAIA Gulf ITA Regional Championship this weekend. No. 1-ranked Kyllian Savary won the Men's Singles Championship over unranked Antoine Audrain from William Carey University in two sets 6-3/6-4. This is the first time in OLLU history that a tennis student-athlete has won this regional championships. Savary automatically qualifies for the ITA Cup Oct. 12-16 in Rome, Ga.
Head Coach Dave Watts commented, "It was an incredible weekend for Kyllian and the team as a whole. Kyllian battled through five tough matches to capture the men's singles title. We will give him a few days off, and then we will start preparing for the national tournament that will feature the top 16 players in the country."
Savary first defeated Samuel Motzaed from Loyola University of New Orleans 6-2/6-1 in the Round of 32. In the Round of 16, he defeated VanDer Woody from Xavier University of Louisiana (XULA) 4-6/7-6 (7-4)/[10-7]. In the quarterfinals, Savary overpowered No. 8-ranked Nereo Suarez from XULA, and in the semifinals, he defeated No. 4-ranked Joao Pedro Okano 7-5/6-3.
He continued, "Johan Favelin had a great tournament as well, making it through the quarterfinals."
Favelin defeated Iker Alonso from Texas A&M University-Texarkana 6-2/6-2. In the Round of 16, hedefeated No. 7-ranked Vinh Nguyen from Dillard University 3-6/6-4/[10-6]. He ended with a loss in the quarterfinals to No. 2-ranked Islam Orynbasar from William Carey University 6-2/6-1.
The tournament was hosted by Xavier University of Louisiana.
