OLLU SOFTBALL FALLS IN DOUBLEHEADER TO NCAA D2 POWERHOUSE UT-TYLER

SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 16, 2022) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) softball team dropped both games against The University of Texas-Tyler (UT-Tyler) on Wednesday. The Patriots remain undefeated at 11-0 and the Saints move to 5-2. UT-Tyler is currently the No. 1-ranked team in NCAA D2.

History

The Saints were 0-4 against the Patriots heading into the doubleheader.

Game One

The Patriots offense started strong early in the opening game. Starting pitcher Ciera Martinez (SR/San Antonio, Texas) allowed five earned runs in 0.2 innings of work. UTT continued its hot hitting in the second and third inning and eventually led 16-0 heading into the bottom of the third frame. Rebecca Duran (SR/Austin, Texas) put the Saints on the board with a solo home run to left field. Kayla Dreese (SR/San Antonio, Texas) added another tally for the Saints in the following inning with a home run to left field as well.

The Saints would score five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but it wasn't enough as the Patriots won 18-5 backed by 18 hits. Dominique Rodriguez (JR/Frisco, Texas) and Dreese provided the spark in the fifth inning for the Saints.

Dreese finished with three RBIs and Duran hit 3-for-3 at the plate. Angela Ramirez (SR/Converse, Texas) and Kelly Anne Salinas (JR/Laredo, Texas) appeared as relief pitchers for the Saints. Salinas allowed only two earned runs in 2.1 innings of work against a strong UT-Tyler offense.

Game Two

The second game of the doubleheader was a struggle from start to finish for the Saints. They were only able to gather two hits, with one being a solo home run by transfer student Cassandra Valdez (JR/Brownsville, Texas). Valdez also pitched the entire game allowing five earned runs with six strikeouts. The Patriots totaled five runs on 10 hits. Starting pitcher Sarah Gartman retired seven Saints and only walked one batter.

Valdez and Madison Nunn (SR/Cibolo, Texas) tallied the only hits for the Saints. Joanna Gonzalez (SR/San Benito, Texas) had six putouts behind the plate.
