OLLU SOFTBALL SWEEPS WILLIAM WOODS UNIVERSITY IN TWO-GAME SERIES

SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 18, 2022) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) softball team defeated William Woods University (WWU) in both games on Friday. The Saints improve to 7-2 overall while the Owls drop to 1-3.

History

This was the first meeting between the two programs.

Game One

The Saints started the day strong by run-ruling the Owls 10-2 in five innings. OLLU broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the second inning when Joanna Gonzalez (SR/San Benito, Texas) doubled to bring in Madison Nunn (SR/Cibolo, Texas). Kayla Dreese (SR/San Antonio, Texas) drove in Gonzalez later in the inning on an RBI single. With a 3-1 lead heading into the third inning, the Saints broke the score open by scoring six runs. Five different Saints recorded at least one RBI in the frame. The Saints finished with 13 hits and starting pitcher Cassandra Valdez (JR/Brownsville, Texas) allowed only two hits and struck out nine batters in four innings of work. Kelly Anne Salinas (JR/Laredo, Texas) pitched one inning and struck out one batter.

Three Saints players had a multi-hit game. Gonzalez finished with three RBIs. She also recorded seven putouts behind the plate.

Game Two

OLLU swept the two-game series with a 5-2 victory in game two. The Owls took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning. Dominique Rodriguez (JR/Frisco, Texas) doubled for the Saints to drive in Nunn and Eneli Garza (SO/La Feria, Texas). After the Saints went up 3-2 in the fourth inning, they added two runs in the following frame. Julissa Moreno (JR/Austin, Texas) doubled to bring in Rebecca Duran (SR/Austin, Texas) and Caitlin Terrazas (SR/Atascosa, Texas) also doubled to score Moreno.

Angela Ramirez (SR/Converse, Texas) started on the mound for the Saints and struck out six batters in five innings. Valdez finished the game with two innings of work and gave up only one hit.
