Saints Give Head Coach Lenington His 100th Win, Defeat HTU 2-1/9-2

AUSTIN, TEXAS (March 7, 2023) — The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) softball team overpowered Huston-Tillotson University (HTU), winning 2-1 and 9-2, to move to 4-0 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Saints are now 18-4 overall, while the Rams move to 1-3 overall and in the conference. The game-one win gave Head Coach Bruce Lenington his 100th career win, all with the Saints. He is now 101-49.

Lenington commented, "These were a couple of tough wins on the road. Our pitching was great all day and gave our offense a chance to get going."

History

The Saints are now 32-11 against the Rams. Last season, OLLU defeated HTU 2-0, 13-5, 2-1 and 8-0. They beat the Rams 3-1 in the postseason.

Game One

After a scoreless first inning, the Saints went up 2-0 in the second. Alyssa Flores reached first on an error by the second baseman. Joanna Gonzalez hit a single, and pinch runner Kaili Luna scored on a wild pitch. Madison Nunn's single sent Gonzalez home.

The game stayed 2-0 through the bottom of the seventh when HTU added a run. Brooklyn Balderas hit to score Kayla Rogers. The game ended with the Saints winning 2-1.

Rebecca Duran, Caitlin Terrazas, Gonzalez, Julissa Moreno, Nunn and Madison Garza got one hit each. Nunn added an RBI.

Cassandra Valdez pitched the complete game, allowing two hits and one earned run while striking out seven. 

Game two

Duran started the second game with a triple. Valdez hit a sac fly to send Duran home to put the Saints ahead 1-0. 

Garza hit a single to send Ariel Montgomery home in the second inning. The Rams added a run in the inning on a single from Abigail Luna that scored Willow Houston.

HTU tied the game at 2-2 in the third inning on a double from Grace Ross that scored Balderas. 

Nunn scored in the fourth inning, and Kristee Salas hit a triple to send Arianna Alejandro home. Duran followed with a hit to score Salas, and the Saints pulled ahead 5-2.

Duran doubled in the sixth to score Salas. Eneli Garza followed with a hit that sent both Terrazas and Duran home. The Saints took the 8-2 lead. 

The Saints closed out the game in the seventh with a hit from Jennifer Estrada that scored Madison Garza. The Saints won 9-2.

Duran led the offense, going 3-for-4, adding two runs and two RBIs. Madison Garza went 2-for-4 and added a run and two RBIs. Salas went 2-for-4, adding two runs and an RBI.

Angela Ramirez secured her seventh win after pitching 4.2 innings.

The Saints host Texas A&M University - San Antonio on Saturday for a RRAC doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
