Saints Extend Winning Streak to 19 With Wins Over UHV

VICTORIA, TEXAS (March 28, 2023) – The No. 2-ranked Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) softball team defeated the University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) in both games of the doubleheader on Tuesday. The Saints improve to 28-4 overall and stay undefeated in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) at 14-0. The Jaguars drop to 13-12 overall and 7-5 in the RRAC. The Saints have won 19 straight contests.

Head Coach Bruce Lenington said, "These two may have been the biggest wins in a season full of great games. UHV is an excellent team and will be a tough out in the conference tournament. I am very proud of our team."

History

The Saints were 15-5 against the Jaguars prior to the games.

Game one

The Saints blanked the Jaguars in the first game of the doubleheader. The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when the Saints plated two runs. Cassandra Valdez and Madison Nunn both hit doubles that scored one run each. Nunn and Rebecca Duran both had multi-hit games and starting pitcher Valdez limited the Jaguars to four hits. Valdez struck out nine batters to earn the win in the circle. OLLU won 2-0 backed by nine hits.

Game two

Madison Garza led the Saints to a win in game two after recording what would be the eventual game winning hit in the final inning. The Saints scored the first run of the game in the first inning when Valdez singled to score Duran. The Jaguars responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to lead. Nunn singled to tie the game in the fourth inning. Garza put the Saints permanently ahead in the top of the seventh inning with a single to score Deandra Vera. Valdez earned another win in the circle when she pitched in relief and held the Jaguars scoreless. Angela Ramirez started and went five innings with one earned run and three strikeouts. OLLU won 3-2 to remain perfect in conference competition.
