Saints Claim RRAC Regular Season Title with Superb Pitching

SAN ANTONIO (April 22, 2023) – The No. 2-ranked Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) softball team blanked LSU-Alexandria (LSUA) in both games of the doubleheader on Saturday. The Saints finish the regular season with a 40-4 overall record and a perfect 26-0 mark in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). OLLU clinched the RRAC regular season title with the pair of wins. The Saints are currently riding a program record 31-game winning streak.

History

The Saints are 9-23 against the Generals.

Game one

The Saints' offense exploded in the first game with 17 runs on 13 hits. Saints starting pitcher Cassandra Valdez pitched her second career no-hitter in the victory. Valdez struck out seven batters in the five-inning run-rule contest. Valdez finishes the regular season with a 20-3 record when in the circle. Eleven different Saints players recorded at least one RBI. Ariel Montgomery hit a home run and five Saints had a double. Joanna Gonzalez recorded a triple in her lone at-bat. The Saints scored 10 runs in a strong third inning and didn't commit an error throughout the game. At the conclusion of the game, OLLU President Abel Antonio Chávez, MBA, PhD, presented the team with the RRAC Championship Banner.

Game two

Angela Ramirez struck out 10 batters in the Saints 5-0 victory in the second game. Ramirez completes the regular season with a perfect 16-0 record. Madison Nunn batted 3-for-3 that included a triple and home run. Nunn's home run was the first run of the game in the fourth inning. Arianna Alejandro scored on a passed ball to start the scoring in the sixth frame. Nunn singled to score Alyssa Flores, and Kristee Salas brought in two runs on a single to center field. The four-run inning would be enough to push the Saints to the 5-0 win. Nunn had another strong game with two RBIs.

Seniors' Day

Three seniors were honored before the first game. Rebecca Dunn, Angela Ramirez and Cassandra Valdez were recognized, and families posed with each senior. At the conclusion of the doubleheader, all 11 seniors received posed with their senior collages for one last photo op. Here from each in the video below.

Up next

The Saints compete in the RRAC Tournament from May 4-7. The team will host the tournament on campus and on the campus of St. Mary's University for the first two days. The last two days, games will be held at OLLU.
