Saints Advance to RRAC Championship After Two Games on Saturday

SAN ANTONIO (May 7, 2023) – The NAIA No. 2-ranked Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) softball team fell to Texas A&M University-San Antonio (TAMUSA) and defeated the University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) in the Red River Athletic Conference(RRAC) Championships on Saturday. The Saints advanced to the championship game versus TAMUSA. The Saints will need to win two games to capture the title, while the Jaguars need one victory.

Head Coach Bruce Lenington commented, "I want to tip my hat to TAMUSA as they were the better team today. I thought our response against UHV was an opportunity for us to grow. We're looking forward to playing in the championship game tomorrow."

vs. TAMUSA

The Saints struggled against the Jaguars in an 8-1 loss. OLLU was limited to four hits and Cassandra Valdez drove in the lone run. Angela Ramirez started in the circle and allowed seven earned runs to suffer the loss. Valdez pitched two innings in relief with five strikeouts. Valdez, Ariel Montgomery, Joanna Gonzalez and Kaili Luna were responsible for the Saints' four hits. The Jaguars only totaled two more hits than the Saints but were able to gather eight runs. TAMUSA scored six of their runs in the first two innings. The Jaguars advanced to the championship game with the win.

vs. UHV

OLLU responded to the loss with a 7-5 nail-biting victory over UHV on Saturday night. The Saints took an early 2-0 lead when Madison Garza stole home and Rebecca Duran scored later in the inning. OLLU eventually led 5-1 going into the bottom of the fifth inning. The Jaguars roared back with three runs to cut OLLU's lead to one. The Saints added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. UHV made noise in the last frame with one run, but it wasn't enough as the Saints held on to win. Valdez pitched all seven innings with 10 strikeouts for the win. Montgomery totaled two RBIs and the Saints had 10 hits.
