Saints Softball Takes Two of Three Against Central Washington

SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 7, 2024) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) softball team won two out of three games against NCAA D2 Central Washington University (CWU) this week. The Saints improve to 4-1 overall while the Wildcats move to 1-7.

History

This was the first meeting between the two programs.

Game one

OLLU's offense shined in the first game of the series on Tuesday. The Saints scored three runs in the first inning with a two-run home run from Cassandra Valdez and an RBI single by Ava Hernandez. Madison Garza joined the scoring in the second inning with a two-run home run. Natalie Rodriguez followed with a three-run home run that scored Valdez and Kayla Dreese. The Saints led by eight runs after the first two innings and won 9-1 with a run added in the fifth inning on a Valdez RBI single.

Valdez also started in the circle and earned the win by allowing only two hits with four strikeouts. Garza, Valdez and Rodriguez finished with a multi-RBI game. The Saints had 10 different players with at least one hit.


Game two

The second game of the series required extra innings. The Saints struck first again in the third inning. Rodriguez continued to collect RBIs with a single that scored Dreese. OLLU's lead held until the top of the fifth inning when the Wildcats tied the contest. The sixth and seven innings were scoreless. The Saints recorded three consecutive outs in the top of the eighth inning. Rodriguez completed a stellar game with a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning to bring home Garza. Hernandez pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts to grab the win.


Game three

The Wildcats won the final game of the series on Wednesday in a comeback effort. The Saints jumped out to a four-run lead in the bottom of the second inning. Dreese drew a walk to bring in a run and Valdez followed with a double that scored three. The Saints advantage held until the top of the sixth inning. The Wildcats gathered six runs on six hits to gain their first lead of the series. OLLU was unable to rally and CWU won 6-4.

Valdez pitched the first 4.2 innings with seven strikeouts and gave up only one hit. Valeria Vielma entered the game in the top of the fourth inning and allowed three hits. Hernandez took over in the top of the sixth inning and suffered the loss after giving up six runs.

Up next

The Saints host the OLLU Saints Classic from Feb. 9-11. The tournament includes Avila University, Sul Ross State University and Texas A&M University-San Antonio.
