SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 10, 2024) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) softball team won its third run-rule game, this time against Sul Ross State University (SRSU) in the second day of the OLLU Saints Classic Softball Tournament. The Saints improve to 7-1 overall while the Lobos drop to 0-2.
History
The Saints are 1-2 against SRSU. The teams last played in 2020.
Basics
The game started under a threat of rain, but aside from a short sprinkle, the Saints and SRSU were able to get through the game without delay. Cassandra Valdez started in the circle, and she struck out two of three batters to put the Saints up to bat. Grace Ross hit a slow rolling single up the middle that scored Valdez and Kayla Dreese. Marissa Bradley doubled to left and Madison Garza and Ross came home to put the Saints up 4-0.
Valdez added two more strikeouts in the second inning and two in the third. The only hit recorded by SRSU came in the third, when Vivian Jimenez singled to left field.
Valdez continued her dominance with two more strikeouts in the fourth inning and three in the fifth. Bradi Hill came in to pinch hit, and she was able to send the ball up the middle to score Valdez. Ava Hernandez's hit scored Natalie Rodriguez to put the Saints at 6-0. Eneli Garza hit to center, and pinch runner Emelia Salinas came home. Kristie Salas got the go-ahead hit to send Salinas home for the 8-0 run-rule win.
Ross and Bradley led the Saints with two RBIs each, and Valdez scored two runs. Dreese recorded three stolen bases, while Valdez added two.
Valdez pitched all five innings, allowing just one hit while striking out 11.
Leanza Chambers pitched four innings for the Lobos and allowed three hits and four runs to suffer the loss. Jaelyn Zuniga came in relief and allowed seven hits and four runs. The Saints had no strikeouts in the game.
