Saints Softball Closes Out OLLU Saints Classic with its Fourth Run-Rule Win

SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 11, 2024) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) softball team closed out the OLLU Saints Classic this afternoon with its fourth straight rune-rule game, including a second against Sul Ross State University 9-1. The Saints improve to 8-1 overall while the Lobos drop to 0-4.

History

The Saints are 2-2 against SRSU. The teams last played in 2020.

Basics

Valeria Vielma started her first game in the circle for the Saints. She wiped the slate clean in the first two innings. After a triple from Kayla Dreese in the bottom of the first, Cassandra Valdez hit a double to score Dreese. Natalie Rodriguez followed with a hit to left to score Valdez, and an error sent her home to give the Saints the 3-0 lead.

Valdez added her third home run of the season in the bottom of the second to score Allysa Garcia. With the score at 5-0, Celina Wilharm came home after a scramble on a fielder's choice.

The Lobos were able to get their first hit in the fourth inning. It was a blooper to first from Lily Wiser. In the bottom of the inning, Madison Garza singled to send Ariana Alejandro and Marissa Bradley home, and the Saints now led 8-0.

In the fifth inning, Samantha Chavez hit a double and Malia Williams-Sala scored to put the game at 8-1. The Saints closed out the tournament on a go-ahead double from Alejandro that sent Bradley home. The Saints won 9-1.

Valdez, Rodriguez, Hernandez, Madison Garza and Eneli Garza each had two hits. Valdez logged three RBIs. Valdez, Madison Garza and Garcia had a stolen base.

The Lobos had four hits in the game. Erin Trevino suffered the loss after pitching two innings. Vielma pitched 4.2 innings for the Saints to earn the win. She struck out two. Peyton Farris closed out the game.
