Saints Softball Defeats Schreiner 17-1 In Nonconference Doubleheader
SAN ANTONIO (March 5, 2024) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) softball team faced NCAA D3 Schreiner University in a nonconference doubleheader this afternoon. The Saints run-ruled both games 9-1 in five innings and 8-0 in six innings. The No. 7 Saints improve to 19-1 overall, while the Mountaineers drop to 1-15.
History
The Saints are 20-2 against Schreiner. Last year, the Saints won 9-1 and 4-1.
Game one
Ava Hernandez started in the circle for the Saints. Grace Ross started the scoring with a single up the middle to score Cassandra Valdez. Madison Garza hit a double to centerfield to send Ross home. Morgan Bradley followed with another double to score Hernandez and Garza and gave the Saints the 4-0 lead. Natalie Rodriguez hit up the middle, and Valdez and Kayla Dreese scored to give the Saints the 6-0 lead. After a scoreless third inning, Schreiner got on the board with a single up the middle from Laci Silva that scored Kendall Lippold. The Saints closed out the game in the fifth. Bradi Hill started the rally with a ground out that scored Ariana Alejandro. Dreese got on base on an error, and Kristee Salas came home. Valdez hit a walk-off solo home run to give the Saints the 9-1 win.
Valdez went 2-for-3, adding three runs and an RBI. Rodriguez had two RBIs, while Dreese added two runs and an RBI. Marissa Bradley added two RBIs. Both Dreese and Ross recorded a stolen base.
Ava Hernandez pitched a complete five-inning game, allowing five hits and striking out six.
Schreiner's pitchers recorded no strikeouts.
Game two
Valerie Vielma started in the circle for the Saints. In three innings, she retired nine players. IN the bottom of the third, Natalie Rodriguez put the Saints on the board with a homer. After another three up-three down inning, Cassandra Valdez reached base on an error and sent Kayla Dreese home to give the Saints the 2-0 lead. Celina Wilharm singled in the fifth to score Madison Garza and Emilia Salinas. Ava Hernandez singled to score Wilharm, and a sac fly from Dreese sent Ariana Alejandro and Hernandez home. The Saints took the 7-0 lead. Wilharm got the go-ahead hit in the bottom of the sixth, and Salinas scored to end the game with the Saints winning 8-0.
Wilharm went 2-for-3 and added three RBIs. Ariana Alejandro went 2-for-3 and added on run.
Valerie Vielma pitched a complete six-inning game and struck out four. The Schreiner pitchers struck out one while allowing 12 hits.

The Saints will get back to their Red River Athletic Conference Schedule on Friday with a doubleheader against Jarvis Christian University beginning at noon.
