Softball Pushes Winning Streak to 33 with Wins Over UHV

SAN ANTONIO (March 28, 2024) – The No. 1-ranked Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) softball team blanked the University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) in a Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) doubleheader on Thursday. The Saints improve to 37-1 overall and 14-0 in the RRAC. OLLU has won 33 straight contests. The Jaguars drop to 22-8 overall and 10-4 in conference.

History

The Saints were 23-30 against UHV prior to the doubleheader.

Game one

Cassandra Valdez pitched a gem in game one. She pitched a complete game and struck out eight batters while allowing only one hit. Valdez remains undefeated in the circle this season at 14-0. The Saints opened the scoring in the second inning when Grace Ross hit a solo home run over the left field fence. Valdez followed with a two-run home run in the third inning that scored Celina Wilharm. Valdez scored in the sixth inning on a sacrifice bunt by Ross to put the Saints up 4-0. The lead held and the Saints won the first game of the doubleheader.

Game two

Ava Hernandez moved to 15-1 in the circle after OLLU won game two in an 8-0 run rule. Hernandez struck out three batters and allowed only three hits in five innings. The Saints brought home three runs in the first inning. Natalie Rodriguez doubled to score Valdez and Ross hit her second home run of the day later in the inning. Ross scored Rodriguez on the two-run home run. Kayla Dreese pushed the lead to 4-0 in the second inning on an RBI single. The Saints went on to add four more runs and finished the game with nine hits. Rodriguez, Ross and Kristee Salas all finished with two RBIs.

The Saints honored mascot Gus Lenington, who was adopted by Head Coach Bruce Lenington four years ago. Gus is in his senior year.
