Softball Finishes Regular Season With Sweep of UHV

VICTORIA, TEXAS (April 23, 2024) - The No. 1-ranked Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) softball team won both games against the University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) on Tuesday. The Saints conclude the regular season with a 47-1 overall record and 24-0 mark in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Saints enter the RRAC Postseason Tournament on a nation-leading 43-game winning streak.

Head Coach Bruce Lenington said, "Today was a fantastic test for our club. UHV absolutely belongs in the national tournament and both games were hard fought. We are excited to put our focus on the conference postseason tournament."

History

The Saints were 25-30 against the Jaguars prior to the doubleheader. The Saints won both games against UHV earlier this season.

Game one

The Saints took game one in extra innings. The Jaguars started the scoring in the first inning on an infield single. Kayla Dreese responded in the second inning with a single that scored Grace Ross. The contest remained tied until the ninth inning. Madison Garza recorded an RBI on a fielder's choice that scored Dreese. The Saints didn't allow a run in the bottom of the frame to snatch the 2-1 victory. The Saints totaled seven hits and Cassandra Valdez picked up the win in the circle. Valdez struck out 14 batters and remains undefeated on the season at 21-0.

Game two

The Saints completed the doubleheader sweep in game two. OLLU put up two runs in the top of the third inning. Valdez doubled to score Marissa Bradley and Garza also singled to bring in a run. Bradley hit a two-run single in the fourth inning followed by an RBI single by Garza. The Saints won 5-0 backed by 13 hits. Ava Hernandez jumped to 18-1 in the circle after pitching a complete game with three strikeouts. She allowed only two hits. Garza and Bradley both had two RBIs.

The Saints will compete in the RRAC Tournament in Alexandria, La., from May 2-5.
