Saints Defeat LSUS to Open Conference Play

SAN ANTONIO (Dec. 1, 2022) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team beat LSU-Shreveport (LSUS) 67-63 to start Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) play. The Saints jump to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in conference while the Lady Pilots fall to 5-3 and 0-1 in the RRAC.

History

The Saints were 18-16 against the Lady Pilots prior to the game.

Basics

The Saints fought off a comeback attempt by the Lady Pilots in the fourth quarter. OLLU started strong by limiting LSUS to only five points in the first quarter. The Lady Pilots responded with 19 points in the second quarter, but the Saints still held the lead at halftime 33-24. Natalia Trevino had 10 points at halftime and Tiffany Lopez added five rebounds.

The Lady Pilots outscored the Saints again in the third quarter. The Saints turned the ball over six times and LSUS shot 43.8 percent from the field. The Lady Pilots eventually tied the game 61-61 with under three minutes remaining. Despite the comeback effort, the Saints held strong at the free-throw line and won 67-63.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Trevino led the Saints with 22 points. Lopez tallied a team-high nine rebounds. Michaela Verrett led the Saints with three assists.

Angel Reese led LSUS with 14 points. Destanee Roblow grabbed 11 rebounds for the Lady Pilots. Tiarra Tillison led the team with three assists.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 21-of-45 shooting for 46.7 percent, 4-of-12 from three-point range for 33.3 percent and 21-of-25 from the free-throw line for 84 percent. LSUS shot 25-of-55 for 45.5 percent, 4-of-17 three pointers for 23.5 percent and 9-of-14 from the free-throw line for 64.3 percent.

The Saints grabbed 28 rebounds while LSUS collected 24. OLLU forced 17 turnovers and committed 18.
