OLLU Women's Basketball Beats Xavier 60-51

SAN ANTONIO (Dec. 16, 2022) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team downed Xavier University of Louisiana (XULA) 60-51 on Thursday night. The Saints remain undefeated in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) at 5-0 and are 8-3 overall. The Gold Nuggets fall to 7-2 overall and 2-1 in the RRAC.

The Saints were 4-3 against the Gold Nuggets prior to the game.

Basics

The Saints used a strong second half to beat Xavier on Thursday. Natalia Trevino had 12 points at halftime for the Saints and Makayla White added five rebounds. The Gold Nuggets shot 52.9 percent in the second quarter to lead by one point at the break.

OLLU's defense stepped up in the third quarter. They limited Xavier to 2-of-10 shooting from the field and forced eight turnovers. Madelyn Soto scored four points off the bench for the Saints. The Gold Nuggets came within seven points of the Saints lead in the fourth quarter but couldn't climb back. The Saints have won five straight conference matchups.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Tiffany Lopez led the Saints with 15 points. White had a team-high 11 rebounds and added 10 points for a double-double. Trevino finished with five assists.

Abryhia Irons led Xavier with 17 points. Nia Bishop grabbed six rebounds for the Gold Nuggets. Autumn Chassion led the team with three assists.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 20-of-50 shooting for 40 percent, 5-of-10 from three-point range for 50 percent and 15-of-20 from the three-throw line for 75 percent. Xavier shot 19-of-55 for 34.5 percent, 3-of-16 three pointers for 18.8 percent and 10-of-13 from the free-throw line for 76.9 percent.

The Saints grabbed 30 rebounds while Xavier collected 29.
