Saints' Defense Drowned by Texarkana

TEXARKANA, TEXAS (Jan. 7, 2023) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team fell to Texas A&M University-Texarkana (TAMUT) 65-38 on Saturday. The Saints drop to 9-6 overall and 6-2 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Eagles improve to 13-1 overall and remain undefeated in RRAC play at 8-0.

Head Coach Tanya Ray commented, "We were not able to match their defensive intensity on the offensive end. Our effort needed to be much better than what it was. We need to regroup and get ready for a good Huston-Tillotson team on Tuesday."

History

The Saints were 4-0 against the Eagles prior to the game.

Basics

The Saints suffered their first loss in program history to Texarkana on Saturday. OLLU was held to single digit scoring in both the first and second quarter. Both teams shot under 30 percent during the low-scoring affair. The Saints failed to have a player total double-digit points while Ashlei Lopez posted 15 for the Eagles. The Saints shooting improved in the second half when they had 11 points in the third quarter and 12 in the fourth frame. The Eagles won 65-38 to continue their undefeated conference campaign.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Makayla White led the team with eight points. White also had a team-high nine rebounds. Carrie Barrera-Lacy finished with three assists.

Lopez led Texarkana with 15 points. Diamond Sweats grabbed nine rebounds for the Eagles. Four Eagles players had two assists each.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 14-of-51 shooting for 27.5 percent, 1-of-12 from three-point range for 8.3 percent and 9-of-17 from the three-throw line for 52.9 percent. Texarkana shot 26-of-78 for 33.3 percent, 4-of-25 three pointers for 16 percent and 9-of-15 from the free-throw line for 60 percent.

The Saints grabbed 38 rebounds while Texarkana collected 50.
