Saints' Defense Steps Up in Win Over JCU

SAN ANTONIO (Jan. 28, 2023) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team defeated Jarvis Christian University (JCU) in a low-scoring game on Saturday. The Saints improve to 14-8 overall and 11-4 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Bulldogs fall to 8-10 overall and 5-9 in RRAC play.

History

The Saints were 24-3 against the Bulldogs prior to the game.

Basics

The Saints limited the Bulldogs to only 19 points in the first half. They forced JCU into shooting 0-for-11 from three-point range. Natalia Trevino had 12 points at halftime and Ariadna Gallardo added four rebounds. The Saints shot 40 percent from the field in the second quarter.

Both teams struggled shooting after halftime. Neither team totaled double-digit points in the third quarter, but the Saints outrebounded the Bulldogs in the frame. The Bulldogs finished strong with 18 points in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit. The Saints won 57-45 and are currently in third place in the RRAC.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Trevino led the team with 15 points. Tiffany Lopez had a team-high eight rebounds. Trevino and Cormia Lewis finished with three assists apiece.

Faith Robinson led Jarvis with 13 points. Robinson also grabbed 11 rebounds to earn a double-double. Four different Jarvis players had one assist.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 20-of-51 shooting for 39.2 percent, 5-of-18 from three-point range for 27.8 percent and 12-of-18 from the three-throw line for 66.7 percent. JCU shot 14-of-60 for 23.3 percent, 2-of-23 three pointers for 8.7 percent and 15-of-26 from the free-throw line for 57.7 percent.

The Saints grabbed 34 rebounds while Jarvis collected 40.
