Saints Struggle in 49-40 Loss to XULA

NEW ORLEANS (Feb. 2, 2023) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team lost a low-scoring game against Xavier University of Louisiana (XULA) 49-40 on Thursday. The Saints drop to 14-9 overall and 11-5 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Gold Nuggets jump to 13-9 overall and 7-7 in RRAC play.

Head Coach Tanya Ray said, "I thought we did a good job holding them to 49 points. On the flip side, we really struggled on the offensive end. I give credit to Xavier; they made it tough all night to get good looks."

The Saints were 5-3 against the Gold Nuggets prior to the game.

Basics

The Saints had a tough time shooting on Thursday against the Gold Nuggets. They shot under 40 percent from the field in the first and second quarter. OLLU turned the ball over 10 times in the first half and totaled four blocks. Xavier took a nine-point advantage into halftime.

OLLU totaled 10 points in every quarter. They outscored the Gold Nuggets in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough to mount the comeback. Cormia Lewis finished with 13 points and Makayla White had three blocks.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Lewis led the team with 13 points. Tiffany Lopez and Natalia Trevino had a team-high four rebounds each. Trevino finished with five assists.

Shylia McGee led Xavier with 11 points. McGee also grabbed nine rebounds. Nia Bishop finished with five assists.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 16-of-50 shooting for 32 percent, 3-of-12 from three-point range for 25 percent and 5-of-6 from the three-throw line for 83.3 percent. XULA shot 20-of-53 for 37.7 percent, 2-of-12 three pointers for 16.7 percent and 7-of-15 from the free-throw line for 46.7 percent.

The Saints grabbed 29 rebounds while Xavier collected 42.
