Saints Win Final Regular Season Game Against Southwest

SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 18, 2023) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team won its last home game of the season against the University of the Southwest (USW) 84-67. The Saints end the regular season with a 15-12 overall record and 12-8 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Mustangs drop to 2-18 overall and 4-22 in the conference.

After the game, the university honored seniors Myah Salas, Angeline Sanchez, Wynter Taylor, Natalia Trevino and Makayla White.

The Saints are 24-1 against the Mustangs.

Basics

The Saints dominated the first quarter led by Natalia Trevino, who scored 10 points in the frame. The Saints kept the Mustangs to just 28.6 percent shooting, while they connected on 7-of-14 from the field and 5-of-5 from the charity stripe.

OLLU let their guard down a bit in the second quarter allowing the Mustangs to make 46 percent of their shots. The Saints scored 19, while the Mustangs added 18 to head into the locker room with the 39-35 lead.

Neither team scored until almost two minutes had expired on the clock. Awreona Ransom made a jumper, which was quickly countered by Trevino. Makayla White led the offense after scoring 12 points for the Saints in the period, while Trevino added nine. The Saints finished the quarter scoring 29-26 over the Mustangs.

OLLU entered the final period leading 68-61. Trevino got the scoring started after a layup. She followed with a three to give the Saints the 73-61 lead. The Mustangs were not able to score one basket until the four-minute mark, and the Saints continued to dominate to pull off the convincing 84-67 win.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Natalia Trevino scored a game-high 29 points including 9-of-16 from the field, 4-of-8 threes and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. Tiffany Lopez added 18 points, while Makayla White scored 16 and Cormia Lewis added 12. Trevino had a double-double after she recorded 10 rebounds all on defense. She also led in assists with five.

Karinna Ortiz led Southwest with 18 points, while Tamaria White scored 15 and Awreona Ransom had 13. White led her team in rebounds with five.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 29-of-54 shooting for 53.7 percent, 6-of-14 from three-point range for 42.9 percent and 20-of-24 from the three-throw line for 83.3 percent. USW shot 24-of-71 for 33.8 percent, 7-of-27 three pointers for 25.9 percent and 12-of-12 from the free-throw line for 100 percent.

The Saints grabbed 35 rebounds while USW collected 32. OLLU forced 12 turnovers while committing 15.
